"A community of makers dedicated
to getting work off our hard drives
and out into the world"
Hi Zine & Print is a Hawaiʻi based collective making zines & sharing our (mostly photographic) work in print form.
The collective was co-founded by James Knudsen and Shane Sakata who share a love of photography, book making and the desire to create a supportive creative community and opportunities for artists to "get work off their hard drives and out into the world".
Three years ago the dream was to encourage more people to print and share their work and to build a creative community that inspires everyone to think about the different ways we can do that individually and as a group.
We meet every other month (or so) either in person or over Zoom and usually start with a round table of introductions where the artists are encouraged to share what they are working on or what’s inspiring them. We then discuss 'all ‘kine things photography', zine making, the possibility of creating small scale or pop-up exhibitions and a curated book of work from the wider Hawaiʻi photography community in the future.
For the last three years, Hi Zine & Print has been hosted by Pacific New Media during the Contemporary Photography in Hawai‘i exhibit held annually at Downtown Art Center (Chinatown , Honolulu). In 2026, the table hosted 27 different zine titles, journals or notebooks created by 17 independent Hawaiʻi makers. Our first presence outside gallery walls will be in May 2026 at the HEART of Honolulu Art Festival sponsored by Downtown Art Center. HEART of Honolulu May 2026 Photo Credit: Ed Tsang

"In today’s era of infinite digital scrolling, where a photograph’s lifespan is often measured in seconds before being buried by an algorithm, Hi Zine & Print is seeking to bring photographers’ images from screens into the physical world. How? By bringing back printed assets like zines, journals, small prints, postcards, and greeting cards, reviving a sense of artistic ownership and engagement with audiences everywhere." Read more...
Artist Collective Keeps Print Alive Through Zines - MIDWEEK East Oahu Voices (June 3, 2026 Pages 8-9)
"The founders of Hi Zine & Print hope to continue creating more opportunities to share their work in person with events like zine fairs, workshops, and group events. “We also want to encourage newer photographers to start printing their work and experimenting with self-publishing,” says Knudsen.
“Our artists are creating work that seems to resonate with the community as well,” adds Sakata. “We want to be part of a grassroots effort to expand the fanbase for photography by offering an affordable entry point for buyers and collectors." Read more...
